Fast not fussy

I want to convert avi movies to mp4. I'm not that fussy about quality, but I'd like it to be fast. Is VCL the right tool? It seems to take a long time, although I admit I don't know what to expect. Seems to take as long or longer than it takes to play the movie.

No, VLC isn't the right tool.

VirtualDub ?
Windows only...yuk. Any other suggestions that will run on *nix? I tried ffmpegX but it takes a long time also.
Thanks
