Is there a cooler way to run htpc-kinda thing than this?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Is there a cooler way to run htpc-kinda thing than this?

Hi all,

I've got a buncha movies on my desktop computer, and an AiW card hooked up to my receiver/tv.

I've got a laptop that I'd like to use as a "remote control" to play movies from my desktop on my tv as easily as possible. I've been using UltraVNC to connect laptop to desktop, then playing movies in VLC. This is kinda cumbersome.

Today I found out about the http interface business, and that looks really awesome - just the sort of thing I could use. Except that it's way to "basic" to be used on a day-in-day-out basis. (For example, there's no way to browse for files to play via http interface.)

I'd like something cooler, slicker, easier, faster, and better than what I've got going. Are there any enhancements to the http interface in the works? Alternatively, is it possible to get VLC to interface with something like Coppermine Gallery? (that'd be awesome)

Or something totally different that hasn't occurred to me - how do you folks get movies from desktop computer to television?

thanks for any insights,

cdj

or example, there's no way to browse for files to play via http interface.
Actually, this feature is possible, but default disabled for security reasons.

Go to c:\program files\videolan\vlc\share\http\admin

and open browse.html

At line 22, replace "_directory_" by "directory".

Then you can go to yourpc:8080/admin/browse.html to browse for files (this page is protected by a password, that you can set in c:\program files\videolan\vlc\share\http\admin\.access, default is admin/admin

I am not aware of any work related to Coppermine for vlc, and there are no major improvements to the http interface (next version will feature pages with an improved design, but basically not much more).

I know several people have created Java programs that use the http interface as a backend to remote-control vlc, but I don't know if one has released its work.

Cool - I'll look into that - thanks!

All good - the Coppermine thing was just a brainstorm that occurred to me..... So the http interface is something of a bastard child for the project? Or at least you all are too involved with subtitles and other more important stuff to deal with extra interfaces......

Thanks a bunch for the response!
