skipping problem when play mpeg file

VLC supports a lot of type video format. But I noticed that if I use VLC to play some mpeg file like mpeg2, the video is not smooth, skipping a lot. If I use Windows Media Player to play the same file, the video will be smooth.

I have been tried to increase file buffer, direct show buffer and other buffer as well. But it seems not to solve the skipping problem.
How can I change the setting to make video smooth? or i do have the source code, does anyone know where to work around this issue?

My environment is: Windows XP with sp1, VLC media player 0.7.2, cygwin.
Thousands of thanks to anyone who advise me on this.

In reality WiMP is skipping a lot of frames making is seem like it goes smoother. VLC will try to display everything, but this will result in worse results when it cannot do this. It's just how VLC was designed...

Hi DJ,

Thank you for the reply. WMP does not seem to skip a lot of frame when it plays video. But if this is the case, so my question is how to change the vlc to make it looks smooth just like WMP because in most cases when we play video from streaming buffer or files, the traffic and movement will be very heavy.
