Alright, so sometimes subtitle files don't quite match up with the dialogue in video files. VLC has an extremely handy audio delay option- is there a similar function available for a subtitle delay?

yes. Look in your preferences to know which.

I don't follow. Specifically where can I find this option?

If you are using an external subtitle file, when you go into:
File >> Open file...

And have selected a video, you can then enable "Use a subtitles file". Select the file, then click on "Advanced Settings...". There you can enter the subtitle delay (in 1/10ths of a second).

If your subtitles are part of the same file as the video then you can go to, in the Preferences:
Input / Codecs >> Demuxers >> Subtitles

Then tick the "Advanced options" tickbox (bottom-right of window). You should then be able to enter a value for the "Subtitles delay" (also in 1/10th of a second). Then press "Save".

Is it possible to make the delay for more than a second? The subtitles for a film I"m trying to watch happen to be about 30 seconds off.

Yes, for that just multiply the desired value in seconds by 10. So, for 30 seconds use "300".

I'm not having much luck with the delay subtitles function (the separate subtitles file for the movie start way too early).

I have tested out the delay subtitles option by changing it to 10 on the first try, and the 2nd time to 20. Both times, the delay didn't work, and the subtitles ended up starting at the exact same spot each time.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
