DVD skips at beginning of each chapter

I have a MacBook OS X 10.4.10. It's fairly new and has 1 GB of ram. I'm running VLC 0.8.6c, and some (but not all) DVDs skip at the beginning of each chapter. The discs aren't scratched or anything- it specifically happens at the transition between chapters. This problem does not occur when I use Macintosh DVD Player- but I would like to solve the problem on VLC so I don't ever have to use DVD Player.
