OSX Multi Channel Audio Device. (mono sound)

Hi there. I have a presonus firestation (8 channels out) and to VLC each channel appears as a seperate device. In OSX's Audio/Midi Settings i can set a certain channel to L and R (and surround channels if i please) _Most_ (actually everythign but VLC) plays through core audio and just respects the settings of Audio/Midi settings.... However in VLC it shows up as 8 seperate channels and i can't get stereo sound through it. Does anyone know a workaround for this? (Just pass the audio through CoreAudio like other apps do (i don't know much about CoreAudio and how it works from a programming point of view) or allows the user to select seperate mono devices for stereo or something like that.

Any help would be appreciated

Something is maybe on the way...

There are a few other threads about this:

viewtopic.php?t=4177

Basically it affects every "pro" and "semi-pro" sound card on the Mac: even Digidesign's Mbox, with it's stereo only output, is presented in VLC as two mono.

But, a programmer from a professional audio interfaces manufacturer got interested in this problem and will try to fix it within VLC (rather than a specific driver fix). If he succeeds, it should resolve the problem for all audio interfaces that have shown this problem so far.

Personally i'm not holding my breath just yet.
I've seen too many ppl say "oh, i'll fix that", and then be stranded in the swamp that is CoreAudio and VLC :)

Come on... The VLC project is asking for OSX developers, I find one that is interested in resolving this problem, and you shrug it off.

Have faith... and patience.

I'm getting a bit pessimistic on this topic i guess :)
