module design question

Hello,
I have to collect some real- time statistics on h264 raw stream ( server side )...
Is it possible to write plugin for this kind of task, without changes in existing code and where ( in documentation) should I look for API?
I have been checking "Hacker'sGuide" on VideoLan Wiki but it doesn't give me any idea so far ....
