listening to internet radio stations

having a somewhat odd issue in three different versions of vlc player. am not seeing anything about it when i search the wiki or the forums:

when i play an internet radio station, such as http://www.radioparadise.com/musiclinks/rp_128-1.m3u it will play for anywhere from 3 - 30 minutes, and then poof. the player just sits there.

i'm suprised not to see anything about this, considering i have the issue on my xp box, my linux box, and the portableapps.com version.

i've tried playing with the cache, setting it up to 30000 ms, as well as checking the box in the prefs | input / codecs | access modules | http(s) | 'auto re-connect' but neither of these things seem to help at all.

any ideas would be appreciated.

some output from the messages console. it played until about halfway through the u2 track and then vlc just sat there. i waited 5 mins before hitting stop, which is when the additional stuff was logged. if i then hit play again, it connects again, and again after a few minutes it simply stops playing.

with other players like winamp or amarok i do not get these disconnects. from the log here it looks like it can't reconnect, but when i hit stop and then play, it hooks right back up.

messages output: ===========

i have also just been through the entire downloaded playlist, and verified that i can establish a connection to each server.

that being said, it took three tries before i could get through the entire list before it crashed . . .

you can try the 'loop' or 'repeat' option (never remember which one is for 1 item, and which one is for all)

unfortunately i already tried that. even if that option is selected, after some time it will simply stop playing. hitting stop then generates some log output:

access_http debug: got disconnected, trying to reconnect
main debug: net: connecting to scfire-nyk-aa01.stream.aol.com port 80

main debug: connection aborted

main debug: thread 4200 joined (input/decoder.c:191)
main debug: killing decoder fourcc `mpga', 0 PES in FIFO
main debug: removing module "mpgatofixed32"
main debug: removing module "bandlimited_resampler"
aout_directx debug: closing audio device
aout_directx debug: DirectSoundThread exiting
main debug: thread times: real 9m5.593750s, kernel 0m0.000000s, user 0m0.000000s
main debug: thread 4684 joined (directx.c:598)
main debug: removing module "aout_directx"
main debug: removing module "float32tos16"
main debug: removing module "trivial_mixer"

main debug: thread 3860 joined (input/input.c:412)

then if i hit play again, it plays the same list it was trying previously. i think the problem is the 'why' behind the 'connection aborted' after it attempts to reconnect.

well i think its time to call it quits. i have three versions of vlc, one on xp, one on ubuntu, and one on portableapps. i can't get them to play streams for any length of time, and apparently no one can help me. there are a few other threads out there and just like mine, they were completely ignored.

i think vlc might eventually be a decent program, but it needs better support first. in rummaging these forums there are far too many threads with no replies to them by people trying to get what i would consider basic functionality to work. so i'll keep using vlc as a free dvd decoder, but as for streaming audio, it just doesn't work. i'm going back to xmms, winamp and amarok.

maybe i'll try it again when new versions come out, but for now, its not worth the frustration of having to hit stop and then play again every few minutes just to keep my music going.

Try Screamer. Great for listening to internet radio:

looks pretty good, but these days if i'm going to support a software project it has to be cross platform, not just windows only or *nix only. hence my hopes that i could get vlc working . . .

I think there is a compatibility issue with the type of audio server you are connecting to? I also have some trouble with AOL stations like Club 977, but when listening to independent stations like Radio Free Colorado http://www.radiofreecolorado.net they work and sound very good. :D

i know that the older version of the play did not have this problem try that go one version back and if that did not work try to download all the other plugins and lib with synaptic package. i also had the same problem. tell me if that does it . i will try to help you as much as i can

wait first try to make sure your box is uptodate and then try to load plugins and lib for vlc that should do it if not then downgrade worked for me
and never give up

i try to download all the other lib but that did not really solve the problem now it plays 12.min then stops so download other lib will not solve the problem but i was way to lazy and knowing that my xp version of vlc works i just downloaded wine #apt-get install wine
and and installed vlc.exe done just go to wine's programs menu and hit vlc. that worked great so far do problems over 12 min. and did not stop once safe to say it worked
:D
