When i hit play on the player the audio is fine but the video gets frozen on the first picture that comes up. If I change Chapters it will change the image but it once again just freezes automatically.

This is happening to me exactly. I have searched here and tried deleting the VLC folder from Documents and Settings, cleared the VLC preferences file, and uninstalled and reinstalled VLC. I just can't get it to work. I have tried all types of files, avi, mpg, flv, and it's all the same, the video comes up with the first frame and sticks. The audio continues fine. I have PowerDVD installed, so I didn't think codecs could be a problem. I can't stream, or play a file directly. I have Win Vista Premium installed. I have Realtec integrated video card on my motherboard. I'm also using the most recent version of VLC.

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? Thanks!

I found the answer, at least for my problem. Here's what worked:

1. Open VLC media player.
2. Click on Settings and select Preferences… .
3. Expand Video and click on Output modules.
4. Check Advanced options in the lower right corner.
5. Set Video output module to either “DirectX“, “OpenGL” or “Windows GDI“
