If you select View -- Messages before starting the movie, you will get a display window of what VLC is doing.

If there is something about "VLC probably does not support...", and likely WMV3, IV50, or RM, the reason is that the video part of the file is encoded with a proprietary (not open source) CODEC, which is not supported by VLC.

If it's saying something about a fourcc of WMV3, try the latest Windows Media Player. If it is talking about a fourcc of 'Rxxx', such as "RM", that's RealMedia, try RealPlayer.

i have the same problem and i got this message :

mkv error: unknow codec id=`V_REAL/RV40'
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `undf'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

what do you think i should use ? i already use Media Player Classic, but with this software i cannot open my mkv files in full screen.

(i'm sorry if the answer is already in the topic but i'm french and stupid so sorry if i didn't understand well)
thx for your help

RV is RealVideo, so RealPlayer is appropriate.

you need to get an ogg codec.

you need to get an ogg codec.
Ogg has nothing to do with RealMedia, so installing it will probably not help. Furthermore, VLC supports it by default on any platform.
