A bug was introduced after version 0.6.0 that caused vlc to stop working on 10.1.5. This bug is hopefully fixed, could you try again with the last test release of 0.7.0? ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/tes ... -test2.dmg

As someone equally new to vlc on a mac perhaps you should change the default on your splash page [0.6.2]

There is no installer. Just download the file, mount the file (Safari does this automatically), open it, drag VLC to your desired destination.
