Release vlc 0.8.7 now

the vlc build o.8.6b has several little bugs, while some of the new features and corrections made in the nightlies are getting approval for being stable. I suggest that the new stable features be thrown in to make vlc 0.8.7, even though it wasn't originally planned.

My arguements for this are as follows:

1
. Several people download flv videos from youtube, and as the flc problem has been fixed, it can help a lot of guys

2. There are reports of less ram usage in the nightlies.

3
. Some other stuff has been fixed in the nightlies and are working just fine(I can't write all that stuff here, you can go through the forum about various problems experienced by people and replies of them being not present in the nightlies

4. Why jump directly from 0.8.6 to 0.9 ? In a similar way, some more versions can be released to cover important bugfixes and stable features.

5
. Several new suggesions have come up for vlc 0.9. All of these can't be implemented at this rate on time. releaseing a stable version inbetween can help by allowing more time for the release of vlc 0.9

Please present your arguements for and against this petition. 8)

I agree and disagree in some ways. I think I've read recently a developer say that the next release is going to be VLC v0.9.0, however I wouldn't mind if they held off a little while longer.

I do have a lot of requests on the table and I'm hoping to see as many of them in the next version as possible (read this thread).

I guess this thread doesn't really apply to me considering that I'm using VLC v0.9.0 (nightly builds) as the only player on my personal computer and none of the previous versions. 8)

nightlies - lol there is a bug found every hour... the stable features are far outnumbered by the unstable components... I say put all the stable stuff in an intermediate version

I say that there will be no 0.8.7 version because since API changes, the backport of the trunk features is very difficult to do. Moreover, because of developers shortstaff, we can't spend all the time making releases.

1. is linked to ffmpeg. and youtubes video work perfectly in 0.8.6b
2. is linked to the new API (not backportable)
3. same as 2.
4. because new internals, new playlist, new media library, new filters architecture, new encoders, and new GUI (with simple preferences.)
5. nope. Some of those suggestions are going to be for 0.9.1 and some have already been developed.

btw, We need developers, so please help.

And btw, the new NB has a systray icon to control VLC

no the nightlie is quite shaky... and you can just remove some unstable features form a nightlie and put it as vlc 0.8.7

Nope it is not as simple.

If you really want, I can try to do a special release for you... But you'll wait for this week end

As anyone who has developed a piece of software will know, making a release is pretty time consuming, even when its a beta... Theres a lot more that has to go into it than just taking a nightly and renaming it...

actually, I just ment putting a nightly without untested features. :|

version 0.8.7 ??? why not??

hmm i just write a polish po file just for 0.8.6-bugfix

I think there are some PO-file differences between the 0.9.0 version
If the 0.8.7 is not planned than there should be one 0.8.6d with the new polish translation

the next version should be 0.8.6d or 0.8.6e with this new pl.po file and a polish installer for the exe.

I don't know about the installer and such, but I do know that there is a VLC 0.8.6d in the branch nightly builds.

polish PO-file for VLC

i already sent the PO-file to xtophe

and they include the installer in polish but not for the 0.8.6c:

I think VLC 0.8.7 could be better than VLC 0.8.6e

VLC 0.8.7 without this unicode bug would be great....

Dunno. I don't know if release would help. But I don't know enough. I have two problems with current version.

h.264 doesn't work properly (performance problems)
Some (new HD) WMV videos wont play properly (decoding issues)

It it would fix those, I naturally would vote yes.

- Thanks!

If, like me, you can't wait for 0.9.0, an intermediate release would be appreciated! I have come to depend on this great software.

I know 0.9.0 can't be too far off, but I definitely vote yes.

It seems like forever since a new release was available! Do we have an estimated release date for 0.9.0?

p.s. Thanks guys, keep up the great work.

I voted yes. Because 0.8.6d also has problems with MKV files and seems to crash pretty often. Also there are serious problems with playlists.

I think H.264 decoding is more of a pressing issue at the moment. It is not possible to playback 1080p video through VLC without significant reduction to image quality. VLC relies on FFmpeg and does not support an option to utilize third party software like CoreAVC for H.264 decoding. Supporting third party software would be a temporary fix for VLC users until FFmpeg decides to make this a concern.

FFmpeg needs frame level parallelization for decoding to fix this issue. Unfortunately, Andreas does not appear to view this as a priority. From my perspective, what good is encoding if you're unable to watch it?

Yep. I have many times mentioned that even Q6600 processor is way too weak to allow Full HD H.264 decoding with VLC... With other products in Windows there aren't any problems. But with VLC Windows and Linux both fail when decoding. CPU maxes out and video totally corrupts.

There are also problems with Linux version with frame sync, but it might be caused by several issues. One which I have heard of might be Ubuntu 7.04 64 bit kernel timing issues (?). But that's another topic. But if it's about VLC I hope it could be fixed too.

- Thanks
