VLC media player 0.8.6b

Postby Jean-Baptiste Kempf » 19 Apr 2007 01:23

Dear VideoLAN users,

From the feedbacks we have had so far on the latest version of VLC media
player, 0.8.6a, we are proud to introduce a new bugfix release, namely 0.8.6b, aimed at fixing some annoying bugs.

Important bugs fixed:

* Some out-of-bound read in demuxers and crashes (incl. CVE-2007-0256)
* Mac OS X Interface crashes, especially those related to fullscreen
* VP31 decoding regresssion on Windows platforms
* Correction of the behaviour for feeding streams to icecast or shoutcast
* Web Browser plugins, rectified incorrect behaviours and improved usability
* Direct3D Video Output modifications for Vista compatibility ( some Nvidia
and Intel drivers are still problematic )

New Decoders:
* Enhanced Flash Video support incl. VP61 and VP60
* Teletext subtitles (telx) support

Mac OS X Interface & Port:
* Diverse usability improvements
* New wizard option to include subtitles
* Screensaver/automatic sleep mode is enabled when a video is paused
* Improved Delete-Preferences-Script

You can download VLC from here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Packages are already available for Windows, Mac OS X and OpenSuSE.

Other binary packages (Debian Packages, Fedora Core RPM, BeOS...)
should follow soon. Remember to reset your preferences if you experience
problems after upgrading from a previous version.

For those who are worried, a new version of VLC media player, that
should be 0.9.0, will come with a lot of new features ( new Interface, new
playlist, new encoders, new filters, etc... ), and should be ready before
the summer.

If you have any bug remaining, please tell us so. And remember to delete your preferences first.

I have already noticed that many of the little bugs have been fixed and am now recommending it on the forums to get more user feedback.

Considering how I did the review of 0.8.6 and the anger that was created. I want to enter more things into trac this time, but trac has been closed to me and needs to be validated. So if someone will do this, I will try to do my part. I tried to get on the IRC but it seems that everyone was sleeping. :)

To all the devs that may think that all the users are ungrateful twerps: This is the place for feedback on your work and it is unfortunate that the majority of people will only comment when there are problems and never give credit where credit is due. Please let it be known that the work you do here is appreciated by millions of users and that you have created a unique program. Never loose sight of the goal to make it more user friendly and more easily updateable and that each portion of VLC should work seamlessly with every other portion. A tall order indeed considering the variety of platforms VLC is compiled under. Keep up the good fight guys!

1) Yes. Probably ffmpeg related. H264 decoding. This changes a lot every day, so it is almost impossible to know what to do. But works way better in trunk.

2) Most likely a Free.fr problem. RTP is being changed a lot too.

Btw, for some people under Windows, they might prefer 0.8.6b-test1 to 0.8.6b, because of VIsta / nVidia.

But the libx264_plugin.dll was left out of test 1. Don't you think this is a problem?

Incomplete versions are real confusing considering it is supposed to be a TEST version :?:

Fortunately I have been round here long enough to know when you can steal plug-ins and when you can't. :wink: I can only assume this plug-in was not ready to go when test 1 was compiled.

BTW I still need a validation for trac and an ability to download stuff off of ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming as the changes in security have locked me out or am I a security risk? :P

Definitely a security risk. :P

Yeah I'm having troubles myself, I not quite sure what it is I'm supposed to do. :? Feature request is fine for me, but j-b said that tickets are the better way to go, and how am I supposed to report bugs? Some assistance? Thank you. :)

It is but noone reported it.
This is fixed in the current binaries.

Just a compilation problem. But still, this is fixed. And 0.8.6b is good improvements. Especially because we will drop some OS after.

Trac will come soon.
About FTP, we have been hacked because of this. I will see what I can do.

Teletext is working, but not entirely good. I'm watching an IPTV Mpeg 2 stream. Setting override page to -1 or 0 in the teletext subtitles decoder it displays multiple languages one after another in rapid order. The result is very confusing. Setting the override page to a teletext page causes the text to be very unreadable.
Is there a way of further controlling what page of subtitles being displayed, or can the text displayed on the screen be controlled?

Some teletext format (different countries) are not well implemented. Can you deactivate some language in the subtitles track menu?

Teletext is the only option under Track. Cannot see any language options there when playing.
