simple question

I hope someone can help me out with this problem. I have searched the forum and I couldn`t find any relevant post. I`m playing these avi files and it seems that whenever I`m watching it on my TV (or computer screen) and I expand it to full screen, the top and bottom are a dark red. Is there anyway to make this black? Its a bit distracting but if it can`t be changed I`ll deal with it.
