Dear VideoLAN users,

The VideoLAN team is happy to announce the first beta version of VLC media player 0.8.6. This version is mostly a culmination of bugfixes and some new supported video/audio/file formats. It is an intermediate release that we decided to create because the next version of VLC media player (0.9.0), is turning out to be quite a big one that's taking longer then expected.

Highlights of the new features and improvements:
* Support for Windows Media Video 9
* Support for VP5/VP6 video
* Support for TTA and Wavpack Lossless audio
* Improved H264 support
* Preliminary DVR-ms, MXF and AVI DV Type 1 files support
* Apple Remote support

You can get a complete list by reading the release notes:
http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/browser/br ... 0.8.6/NEWS

Known Issues with 0.8.6-test1:
* Drag and Drop of files in linux and windows may not work

Binary packages for Windows and MacOS X (ppc & x86) are available. You
can download those and the source code as well on:
http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... 8.6-test1/

Remember that this is a beta version. Please test it heavily and report
bugs. Known bugs are registered in the trac database:
http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/roadmap
If you register in our Trac you can also file your own bugs.

Deleting the last item in the playlist still deletes the whole playlist, and now files can not be added by dragging and dropping. Also, some keyboard shortcuts seem to have stopped working (The delete key no longer removes items from the playlist)

Also, right click functionality seems to fail after a dropped item is added to the playlist.

Dropped files truncate seemingly in random fashion.
Dropping it on the playlist gives one result dropping it on the player gives a slightly different result. Seems to mostly effect filenames with spaces.
I did some testing on this and this is what I found:

edit added to the bug tracker as 792 and 793

edit: oh crud, way to read jacob.. sorry about the drag and drop stuff... I see its a known issue.

Because the developer of the java bindings didn't backport his changes to 0.8.6 and I don't know how to do it.

1: WMV2 video for which the support is incomplete unfortunately
2: WMV3 video. Works just fine on my Mac. It might be that decoding of this video has become slower on windows, because we now use the Open Source implementation for this codec, instead of the Windows native one.

Regarding *mouse only* users (such as Home Theatre PC) I believe an exit/quit shortcut should be added at the bottom of the right click menu. Also regarding *keyboard only* users, if would be very user friendly to add the key shortcuts combination of the shortcut in the menu itself. Key shortcuts are a nightmare to remember especially as they are different in vlc/xine/mplayer...

I guess these comments may not have the best place here but could be added as tasks in future roadmap?

Cheers,

Hello The DJ,

I read in the changelog that new file formats are supported through new decoders. Does that mean that transcoding of those files is also supported?

I think particularly about WMV3 and Flash Video but also about FLAC whose transcoding does not work.

Thanks

It seems that 0.8.6 still doesn't have teletext subtitles support. Is there any progress on that?

Now this is a nice surprise for me! I always had to use VLC 0.8.4 since 0.8.5 wasn't able to play wmv files with audio in my computer. 0.8.6 beta 1 works too! Yayyy thank youu so muuuch! VLC + VLC team are the BEST!

Hello.

I'm a french developpers using the activeX plugin into delphi 6.

I had problems to invoke the goom effect with the activex. I always had to destroy and recreate the activex plugin to make this effect possible ...It isn't possible to put the parameters through vlc directly because the parameters are not refreshed.

And Delphi bug when you destroy and create the activex plugin.

Can you fix this bug in the future version of VLC ?

Excuse for my english language....

We will need more information about what goes wrong during destruction of the activex module. Please see if you can provide any.

It is now possible to have VLC in the systray, in addition to the taskbar or instead of it. You can enable/disable this feature in the preferences of the skins2 module.

VP6 is the same as VP6.1?

I try VLC 0.8.6 RC-1 , VP5 and VP6 works , but in some clips i get this message and VLC stops:

"no suitable decoder module for fourcc `VP61'."

if VP6 and VP6.1 is the same please add the VP61 fourcc handle into VLC.

Thanks.
