I have the new vlc (0.7.2) and I had 0.7.0 and it did not do this, it will open the first file and play it and then after that it wont play any other. It comes up with a gray screen, the sound plays and when I close vlc, the gray screen closes and you see the video playing behind it for a split second and it closes. Pleas help!!!! I love this new version but it isn't working! I have rebooted and no luck. Thanks for any help.

Try preferences->interface-wxwindows
and disable the embedded video option and restart VLC.
See if this helps.

I did that and it worked, but I want to keep the controls at the top of the video. That is why I loved this new update because it kept those contols at the top where you could adjust things, I don't like how you play a video and it covers up the bar to pause, adjust sound etc. Also a big problem is when I associate files and have done what you asked, every time I open a file and then close the video the bar stays there and if I click on another file it opens up another bar and after how ever many files I open I have that many bars to close. I want it the way you have made it for the new release and have it working please!! Any other suggestions?? Thank you for your help.

I had the same problem (in Linux) and I fixed it changing the video output device. I do not know if this is also the problem in Windows.
