looking for fileformat of mpg or vob-files

Maybe a simple question for the developers: Where can i find documentation of mpg-files. So I'm looking for the format of the file, not the real video/audio contents inside. I'm espcecially looking for header-information: where to find the lenght of the video and so on.

Please help me.
