VLC hangs/frezes/locks while playing a DVD (LOTR two towers)

VLC kept freezing during Lord of the Rings two towers, CD 1, 2, and the appendices. It would usually hang after about an hour or so. To fix it, I would close the player, but the video window wouldn't close, so I'd have to CTRL-ALT-DEL it. Then I could re-run VLC, and open the DVD again. I could restart the DVD at a point just before the previous freeze, and it would play from that point, through the point where it previously froze. So it isn't anything to do with the DVD being scratched, I don't think.
Does anyone know why this happens?
NOTE: I have no tried any other DVDs yet, just that one.
