VCD audio skipping

Ok I'm a first comer hello whatever.
So here is my little problem. Recently within the last month or so I took interest in trying to burn some VCD's, after alot of failers (due to crappy programs) I successfully burned a VCD. I have successfully played it in two DVD players perfectly fine but whenever I play it with VLC I get this annoying audio skipping. About every 3 or so seconds the audio cuts out for a fraction of a second. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening and if it could carry over to DVD playback?
I'm concerned because I'm going to be getting a DVD-RW drive to replace my 5 year old CD-RW driver. Could this be happening simply because my drive is getting old? I really doubt it has anything to do with the rest of my computer.
