.mkv file, no audio

Ok.
I'm trying to play a .mkv file in VLC.
The video plays, but the audio does not. However, I am told that VLC should play the audio as it has full .mkv support. But nevertheless, there is no audio playing.
I go to View>Messages & this is written there:
main error: couldn't find a filter for the first part of the conversion
main error: couldn't set an input pipeline
.. Could this have something to do with it?
Anybody have any ideas on how to remedy this, or what may be wrong?
All help would be appreciated!! THANK YOU!

mkv is just a container, what we need to know is the audio codec. Go to "View -> Stream and Media Information -> Advanced Information" and look for the "Type: Audio" stream.
Other things that can help are to delete your existing preferences, upgrade to the latest vlc, check with another player to make sure it's not the file that's the problem...

I can't see "Advanced Information". Is it my version of VLC maybe?

No matter, just look through the output of "vlc -vvv mymoofie.mkv" and find the "Track Type=audio" section. The audio codec will be under "Track CodecId=A_AC3".

I'm having the same problem with Love Hina, of all things.
The video codecs say mp4a.

Also, on a different issue, there is a ton of video lag, where the screen just freezes up for a couple of seconds.

If there is no Advanced Information tab, you have an older version of VLC and the format Info.. will be on the first page of the Menu. Post it here.

We all hope you meant audio codec is MP4a, (AAC) audio is supported.
What is the file type?
What is the video format?
Have you tried any other file types?
If the file type is MP4 and the Video is MP4v or H.264 try the file using QuickTime. Does it play normally?
