Can I force a video decoder for a stream?

Hi all,
I am using VLC 0.7.1 under Linux(installed with source code). I have some problem when get stream in mp4v Format. It cannot recognize the ES of video, it reported that "ES44 has unknow type". The VLC didnot load the module ffmpeg4, and there is only audio but no video.
I tried to force the video decoder for the stream, I type "vlc -vvv --codec ffmpeg udp://@239.20.30.40", but it was no use, there is no different message in the debug info. How can I type to force the video decoder for it? or is there any method to let the VLC to recognize the video type? Did I lose some configure option when doing the install?(when I use the rpm version under RedHat is OK)
Thank you for seeing my question and sorry for my poor English. And VLC is really a good thing, I like it:)
