problem with VLC media player - Frame freezes once an hour

Postby Mange » 03 Dec 2003 14:08

Hi

I am having problems with my VLC player when I am watching movie files such as .avi. Sometimes the frame freezes and the application crashes. I have to force quit VLC and start again and FF to where I was watching once or twice during a movie. It is really annoying and I was wondering if anyone knows a simple solution to my problem.
Also when I have subtitles added when I watch a film the text is displaced to the bottom right instead of just the bottom, but is working.
I have no problem with the VLC media player on my other older computer what so ever and they have the exaclty same OS; they both have "win XP professional (5.1, build 2600)"
Differences between them is that the computer that runs VLC perfectly is a 1.0 GHz pentium 3 with 256 MB of ram and the computer wich I'm having a little trouble with is a 3.0 GHz pentium 4 with 1024 MB of ram.
They are both running DirectX 9.0b

How come my older computer works better with VLC?

Any help will be appriciated
Thanks

With vlc 0.7.0 is same problem.
Maybe vlc hate fast computers?

In Windows Task Manager it is possible to assign a single processor to a process.

Could you try that with VLC and check if the freezing issue still appears ?

I have the same problem with the 0.7.0 (beta?). But I have trouble Fast Forwarding with this version so I stick to the 0.6.2 until I need a reason to use the 0.7.0

I didnt understand that with the task manager though.

Ok, I just found an immensely huge bug in the date calculation routine :)
This bug (win32 specific) only gets triggered on special hardware like multi-processor systems or P4 with hyperthreading and a few other cases.

The fix will be available in the build that will be generated this evening so it would be nice if you could try it when it is available.

VLC Multicast on multiple PCs

Postby damion » 09 Dec 2003 16:42

I'm currently using a combination of VLC v7.0 beta and 6.2 on 20 client PCs streaming multicast from one VLC server. The PC's running vary greatly in resources and OS. All range between a 128MB PI and 256MB PIII running Win 2K, 2k Server, and XP Pro. (Yes, some people actually still have a few PI's kicking around that are good for nothing else but visual indicators :) )

The simplicity of the application is great, however, the stream often stops at varying times within about 12 hours. More than 50% of the time when the stream stops it is not responding and must be shut down through task manager which can be quite a hassle on this many machines. It sounds like there may be some type of memory leak which causes the app lock up periodically. Has anyone considered this possibility ???

NOTE: v6.2 often will not loop the playlist when the stream ends, but 7.0 will.

I actually have seen this problem myself and tracked it down to the directx audio plugin.

I couldn't find what the exact problem was with the directx audio plugin though (it could also be just a buggy driver).

If you have time to do some other experiments, try to select the "waveOut" audio plugin in the preferences of VLC.

Raahhaaa!!!

That will teach me to test my changes before committing them ;)

Ok I fixed it and tested it this time so the 2003/12/11 snapshot should be working fine.

same problem here, i'm running a dual amd mp and a dual pIII, both of them with freezings, the third computer, a single pII, is running with no problems.
win2k, directx 9.0b, gforce2 mx

is there any solution yet?

Version 0.7.0-test2 seems to work fine. all previous versions crash on my computer. The only problem with 0.7.0-test2 is that I cant get the subtitles to work.

Define "cannot get subtitles to work"

What isn't working, what kind of subs, what kind of video, what steps did you take, what is it reporting in the messages window. etc. etc. etc.
Don't use PMs for support questions.

I'm not sure I did this message thing right, because most of the messages appeared when I pressed the stop button. The same .avi .sub and .txt files work very well with previous versions of vlc (0.6.2 and 0.7.0-test1) without having to change any settings. Is there some default subrirle setting that has been changed?
