I've checked the system using the alsa speaker-test utility and it seems that all my speakers are working okay.
I guess the first thing I should do is upgrade vlc but gentoo doesn't have 0.7.1 ready... But according to http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/NEWS , I believe my problem shouldn't matter...
Relevant VLC configuration are as follows:
Settings -> Audio -> Audio output module; alsa
Audio -> Device; 5.1
Is there any settings that I am missing out? I am using Hercules Digifire 7.1 sound card.
