Choppy audio in a specific wmv9 file

Postby neek » 02 Feb 2006 07:42

Hi, When I view this file:

http://www.investinisrael.gov.il/CmsTam ... Israel.wmv

the audio is very choppy throughout. I can play this in Win Media Player without issues. I searched Trac, and don't see anything similar (only an issue about mono audio being choppy, that's already closed.

I'm using VLC 0.8.4a on WinXP Pro (with SP2 + other security fixes). DirectX 9.0c. I'm running on a decently high-end Vaio laptop (1.8GHz Pentium M, 512MB of memory, not much else running when I run VLC).

Can anyone please verify that they hear the same problem? If so, please report this in the bug db. Thanks.

I tried it out, and it seems like the stream simply cannot be downloaded quickly enough from the server. Not much you can do about that. VLC doesn't do extensive buffering to circumvent such issues. Try Windows Media Player instead.

Same problem if the file is stored locally

I saved the file to my disk, and when I tried playing it, I still got exactly the same issues. So, this has nothing to do with streaming bandwidth to the web site.

Thanks!

Here's another example

Many files I find give me the same problem, but here's an example of one that's small enough to be readily downloaded for you to check out. I must say that I love VLC and it's been a major problem solver, as the only player to support so many file types. However, the audio is quite often flakey, nad very often shows audio issues in the message window, even if the sound is OK.

I'll post more examples if you like...

Thanx!

Audio almost always needs correcting to keep it in sync with the time line. Those messages are usually normal and to be expected. Only once they start happening multiple times per second, usually an issue might be present.

anyway, I have no issue with this file on my Mac. It might be that this is an issue with the DirectX audio module of VLC windows. A lot of issues with it have been reported lately. Unfortunately our maintainer for DirectX is no available to fix or investigate the issues.

You could try with the WaveOut audio module. (select it in the prefs).

Thanks, but...

Thanks for the quick tip...
Sorry to say, it didn't fix the problem...
I changed the Audio Output Mudule to Win32 WaveOut... no better.
I even disable the float32 resampling... no go...
The message window gives me a lot of this:

main warning: buffer is 47075 in advance, triggering downsampling
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (127904)
main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling
main warning: buffer is 88892 late, triggering upsampling
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (-127919)
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (126548)
main warning: resampling stopped after 3486284 usec (drift: -85708)
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (-125731)
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (125846)
main warning: buffer is 86323 late, triggering upsampling
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (-126334)
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (127554)
main debug: audio output is starving (128119), playing silence
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (126454)
main warning: audio drift is too big (203310), dropping buffer

I particularly enjoy the "timing screwed" message... LOL

Anyhow, I rarely have this problem with high quality video, mostly just vlogs, like M4V, ASF, and these low bit audio MP4's.

I'm mostly posting this for the benefit of your excellent R&D efforts.

Here's a video I'm sure you'll like that I think used to play, but the audio hasn't worked for a couple VLC versions...
The message repeats:

ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (894 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (894 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (894 bytes)

Here's the link. Try it you'll like it:
