Getting VLC to understand commercial skipping from comskip

Postby Guest » 30 Jan 2006 02:58

I can't find any instructions on how to get VLC to skip commercials in playback, if a txt file from comskip.exe was created for the mpg file. Does some sort of converter need to be run that merges the commercial skip frames into some meta data values for VLC to be able to see them? Can VLC be instucted to skip frames?

In GBPVR, it shows a time line with green areas being the desired content and commercials represented by black bands. It skips them automatically, but you can back up if the comskip.exe guesses are wrong. It would be awesome if the VLC offered something similar. Right now, I find the slider at the bottom of the video window 'adjusts' as the movie plays, so it doesn't show the true ratio of remaining time in the movie. For this to work right with commercial skipping, it would need to always represent the entire time of the movie and indicators would need to show the in and out points for commercials.

As maintainer of Comskip I can add whatever input VLC would like to see.
Any suggestions?

Can you give an example of what sort of file comskip produces?
does it produce byte seekpoints for instance?

With mpeg that would be very useful in VLC, since VLC doesn't have accurate seeking for mpeg yet. For avi, timeindexes are more useful.

It could be implemented i guess, but i'm not sure if anyone has the time atm. We'd love to assist though as usual.

Byte positions in the file are the most difficult for me.
However it would be no problem to use fractions as I notice the internal seek control also uses a fraction as parameter.

How about a commercial to cut out per line with the start and end position as a fraction of the total frame numbers

Like for 2 commercial blocks
0.01 0.015
0.3123 0.41534

Implementation would then be to read the file, watch during playback if the seek position gets beyond one of the commercial block positions and then to jump to the corresponding commercial and position.

Have there been any changes in comskip or vlc that would allow commercial skipping to be a reality? It was very exciting to see Erik on the thread...

The DJ is missing these days, i heard he's at school :/
I don't know who in the team would be able to implement that, maybe you can mail vlc-devel mailing list so everyone can hear, since not everybody does read the forum

I'd love this function in VLC. I use VLC to watch more or less everything.

Shouldn't require much of an effort I'd imagine to implement such a function. If it reaches a "marker" that the commercial starts, simple skip to the end-marker.

Should this be done in the playback part or in the input part?
When done for the "file in" input it could be used both for playback and streaming.
Tell me what kind of input format is simplest to implement for you and I will make comskip generate it.

Hello,

Is this thread dead? Is there any chance of getting VLC to understand comskip output?

Thanks,
