VLC Displays non-existent capture tracks

when I play an mpg or mp4 video with no subtitles I get a list of 5 tracks which don't exist. With some files that have no captions "sub-title" is greyed out which it should be. How can I fix that. If I ad say English captions with another program, I want the subtitle list to show only one entry. Is there something wrong with my source file that forces VLC to display these non existent captions and if so, how can I repair the source file with another program?

You would have to edit the files to remove the bogus tracks. Sounds not worth the effort to me.
