How to stop playback area automatic size changes?

In VLC Media Player I often want to adjust the size of the playback area by going from the maximized size down and then adjusting by dragging the sides or one of the corners. That works great even after it gets to the end of the clip and the clip stops playing. But when playing the clip again or starting a different clip the playback area jumps to an entirely different size and location on the monitor screen. So if you have a number of clips in a playlist and you adjust the playback area the way you want it, you have to readjust it every single time it moves to the following clips. So you can't enjoy watching what you're trying to enjoy, because you're spending more time readjusting the size of the playback area than it takes for the playlist to play. Is there a way to get it not to change but to just stick with the adjustments you've made?

Tools > Preferences > uncheck Resize interface to video size
Close and reopen VLC Media Player

Well, it worked once so far...
