Record from old "rm" files produces empty mkv files

Hi folks,

I have a very old video file, originally created by RealVideo, file extension "rm".
Using VLC 3.0.16 (Windows, but I wouldn't think this is Windows-specific), it plays fine. I'm trying to record a clip from it. I push record and it appears as if it is doing its thing, but the resulting file is empty (size zero, extension mkv).
Codecs: RealVideo 1.0 (RV10), RealVideo Sipr (sipr)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, since the record feature of VLC is recording streams in their native formats, I'm not very surprised that it has problems with this old depecrated format.
I'm not even sure the MKV container supports Real video streams and the RM container is proprietary.

Thanks.
So, is there any way to do what I'm after (record, basically cut, a piece from longer RV footage?

I think you need a dedicated editor for Real video, or one which supports this format, but I don't know any.

Looks like there is a built-in one in RealPlayer:
