How do I get VLC to load the filename and duration without substituting metadata instead

When I try to load a file, I just get the metadata for the title, and no duration. I had to install VLC player on a fresh system, and I don't remember how to get it so I could just drag a file into the playlist, and the filename would be the title in the playlist, and the duration would automatically be determined.

I did find a fix of sorts, but I was hoping someone would have a more general fix: I just deleted the metadata from all the files.
