Play location appears over timeline, how to disable

Play location appears over timeline, how to disable

Postby Ian_TO » 02 Aug 2022 05:04

When a video is playing and I click on the timeline to jump forward a footage label in a white box appears showing that position in the file (i.e. "15:20") and then remains on the screen, only disappearing if I click on the screen again.

Every single time.

I'd like it to never appear. I found out how to disable it once, but can't find that instruction again.

So, how to permanently stop this from appearing?

Thanks for your help.

I can't reproduce the issue, the white box quickly vanishes for me.
I'm not sure if there is a setting for that.

I wonder if this is isolated to the ARM version of VLC that I'm running on a Surface X Pro ...?

Does it occur when using the touch screen, the mouse, or both ?

I usually use the touchscreen, I am not in front of the Surface at the moment to try using the trackpad.

I did say "clicking" but I meant tapping on the screen.

Hi Lotesdelere,

The behaviors on the ARM version of VLC are different on the Surface Pro X depending on whether the touchscreen is used or the mouse/trackpad is used, as you wondered.

If the trackpad or mouse is used, first clicking on the video play progress bar causes the footage label to appear. If the cursor is kept anywhere on or below the progress bar the footage label persists. As soon as the cursor is moved above the progress bar, the label disappears.

However, using the touch screen, the label persists after touching the progress bar at any point to advance or retreat the playing point of the video, unless I subsequently and additionally touch the screen anywhere above or below the progress bar.

Some discrepancy between the behaviors of touch-click and mouse/trackpad-click I suppose.

Are you not seeing the behavior if you use the touch screen to indicate a point on the progress bar while a video is playing?

Thanks for your help with this.

I don't have a computer with a touch screen so I can't test that.
You should create a new report ticket on the VLC Trac with your above report and the link to this thread:

OK, Lotesdelere, I appreciate your help with this.

I'm not going to report a bug because of the arcane process required to do so. I struggled to open a Gitlab account for some time but couldn't figure it out and frankly, it should be easier if they really do want to hear about bugs.

Thanks again,

OK, dumb comment on my part, I'll figure it out and report it.
