Scaling the "Film Grain" effect?

Postby veepa » 17 Jul 2022 19:13

Hi - I recently discovered how applying the film grain filter in "Video Effects" works wonders at smoothing out compression artifacts in videos that are 1080p or 720p. But I've noticed that the grain does not scale with the ratio of the video ... so when you use it in a video with say, 640x480 resolution the grain will appear to be bigger once you maximize the video to fill your screen. The grain at the scale in the SD videos is just too big, so it washes out too much detail. It's a real shame, because I have plenty of videos in 480i/480p that could really benefit from the effect it has on the higher definition videos.

Is there any way to scale the grain effect? I couldn't find anything myself, but thought maybe there was some external plugin that could help me with this. Adjusting the "variance" just makes the grain more or less transparent. I've also gone into the advanced settings for the "Grain" filter and tried adjusting the minimal and maximal period settings just to see what that would do, but none of it adjusts the actual size or scale.

If there were just some way to make VLC think that an SD video were upscaled to 720 or 1080p while it's being played, I was thinking that could work at making the grain scale to a nice smaller size? I really don't know.

Anyone have any ideas?
