HDR content on SDR monitor

Hello. I have some movies that i wanna watch, but I commonly encounter this problem:
As you can see it looks like SDR in HDR color space. The whites are grey.
Looking at the histogram, this is not true HDR. It has been widened or something.
In this image, I used the levels adjustment in photoshop to clamp the whites to what they should be at.
I wanted to know if this is possible in VLC. That would solve me a great deal of pain.
I can't use other software to remux/render with filter as these are huge high quality 4k files, that would take far too long
