Which Codec does my file have? What does MPEG1/2 mean?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Which Codec does my file have? What does MPEG1/2 mean?

Postby QuoteUnclothed » 25 Aug 2021 18:58

Greetings,

im trying to find out which codec my file has by looking at the information available under Tools > Codec.
It says MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv), which leads me to my question:

Is the codec of this file ...

- MPEG-1 -> Does the "2" refer to "Audio Layer 2"?
- MPEG-2
- One of the two (VLC could not identify the exact codec?)

I hope you can help me out :o

I bet it must be MPEG-2 video which is used on DVDs, MPEG-1 is not used anymore for decades.
You can use Media Info for more details about your file:
