Why do older files no longer play correctly ?

Hello,

I recently upgraded to VLC 3.0.16, and files which used to play just fine with VLC now are seen as "broken", require an index re-creation, and, even when I do recreate the index, the playback stops if I try to skip ahead, or rewind.
On older versions (I cannot remember the exact version number, sorry), it worked just fine.

Now, were it on a single video file, I'd assume the file got corrupt somehow. However, it does this with a whole lot of older video files, so I'm assuming it's a CODEC-related issue...
Is there a way to get back support for older video formats ?

One of the videos says its a MPEG-4 (DX50), for instance - if it has any importance.

Also, Windows Media Player plays it just fine. So, why won't VLC play it correctly anymore ?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.

100 MB max should be enough.

I let the video run for 5s before trying to skip ahead, which stopped the playback. And I had let VLC rebuild the index.
Here is the log:

How do I upload a "sample" of a video file ?
Won't editing a copy to a shorter size defeat the purpose, by creating a newly encoded file, possibly in a different format ?

Just upload a short original file exposing this issue, the shorter the better.
No edit, no reencode, no binary cut, we need a full complete original file.

Video file posted here

This file has a wrong .MPG extension because it's an .AVI file.
That said, it's playing fine with VLC 3.0.16 and without any warning message.

Strange. Would it be a missing codec on my side ? Or maybe I need a VLC 3.0.16 compiled with more features than those in the standard binary ?

Also, have you tried skipping ahead or rewinding ? When I do, the video stops playing immediately...

I have renamed the video to .AVI and no problem so far even when navigating inside the video.

Reset the preferences and try again:

Thanks, resetting the preferences did the trick.

Any idea of which "setting" could break file reading in this way ?
