VLC will play but not convert H265 video

Take a look at this small video from here:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3byrwdqn1sd4 ... ZbMga?dl=0
Ch14_20210425013002 - Copy.mp4 (8MB)

VLC will play video and audio (h265 format) but will not convert it to h264 (only converts the audio).
VLC sees this in the CODEC settings:
CODEC: MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hev1)

When I use another converter (Adobe Media Encoder), same thing (it only sees the audio) it has this error message:
"File uses unsupported video compression type "hev1"."

Is it because it should say hevc, not hev1?

Any help much appreciated.

I can reproduce the issue, I'm not sure what is going on here.
I got these error messages:

Code: Select all

mp4 error: missing hvcC ... main debug: using encoder module "x264" main error: cannot add a new stream (unsupported while muxing to this format). You can try increasing sout-mux-caching value stream_out_transcode error: cannot add this stream main error: cannot continue streaming due to errors with codec hevc

Maybe because of the 2592x1944 size of the video ?
Avidemux is converting it fine though.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the conversion, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Then you should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your log file, the link to your sample file and the link to this thread:
