Spontaneous James Bond Bluray Codec Issue?

I've encountered a peculiar problem with VLC bluray disc playback involving the four latter day Daniel Craig Bond discs that I have. Before this issue surfaced on 27/4/21 I was able to watch them via in drive disc playback just fine. On the date mentioned I tried to watch SKYFALL and the video playback began to artefact in the middle of the opening credits, in exactly the same way as this unfortunate fellow demonstrated some eight years prior.. the same vertical lower screen tearing and artefact patterns.

I then discovered after this hiccup that in addition to Skyfall my other Bond discs are now misbehaving in the same fashion (!?). No other discs that I've played exhibit this problem. The problem doesn't arise until a certain time (somewhere between 15-17 mins), but the time at which it happens is individually replicable on each disc, each at its own point between the time window mentioned. This problem is only exhibiting itself on live disc playback. Having ripped the movies with MakeMKV (which is also acting as playback filter for VLC) to test the theory of disc issues it seems the rips play fine, which logically suggests a codec playback issue rather than the actual data?

I've tried unsuccessfully to remedy the situation, having:

Cleaned the system out with CCleaner
Made fresh installs of the nVidia drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode (studio drivers 461.92), VLC (3.0.12), MakeMKV (1.16.3) and Java (8 update 291). Hardware listed below:

Windows 10 64bit
Ryzen 1600 cpu
EVGA GTX1070sc
Pioneer BDR-XD07 USB 3.0 player (attached via a 3.0 port)

Any help or insight will be appreciated!

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was related to layer change

Thanks for the reply InTheWings.. EAN's listed below, and you can add three X-Men movies to this list now too, also entered below:

A couple of years ago PowerDVD users were having issues that sounded an awful lot like mine - I've linked it but I don't know how relevant it may be..
(https://www.cyberlink.com/support/faq-c ... o?id=12755)

Cas Royale - 5 039036 075022
Quantum Of Solace - 5 039036 075039
Skyfall - 5 039036 058315
SPECTRE - 5 039036 076159

X-Men Days of Future Past - 5 039036 069274
X-Men Origins Wolverine - 5 039036 042154
X-Men First Class - 5 039036 048354

I'm curious that you ponder layer change.. do discs go through a manufacturing process which would place their layer change points in close proximity to the same spot?

I have had this issue as well, but not only with the James Bond films. The Star Wars Complete Saga box set from 2011 also appears to have this same issue where it starts to artefact after the 16 min mark. It might have something to do with BD+, but other than that I don't know what to do.

I suspect you may be right re the BD+ theory, but I believe it's a shortcoming with the way VLC handles disc playback, so hopefully the powers that be can address this shortcoming. I tested the player theory by downloading Leawo's bluray player and took a free shot in the dark, confirming that this player handles the bond films just fine. I tried the aforementioned Fox discs (secondhand purchases - X Men:Wolverine, X Men:Days of Future Past, X Men:First Class, which concurs with your experience with Star Wars), but I can confirm that these too play back fine with the Leawo player.. so.. yep. At this point I'd presume that some discs will exhibit this problem, but this notion comes with an odd caveat - I watched Cas Royale and Quantum of Solace just fine for a while when I first got them before this odd behaviour kicked off, and can report a similar irrationality since then. i watched Alita Battle Angel (Fox) and managed to watch it all the way through without incident last week, having tested it also by skipping through. I tested The Martian (Fox again) and that too seemed okay with skipping, but I came to watch that tonight and it began artefacting, though I could skip and it would play bits after the artefact point okay. I suspect if I tried Alita again that will now be artefacting, so whatever it is that breaks playback it must be something distinctly odd.. very strange stuff.
