play control with key binding

i use key bindings to control playback in VLC.
there is a difference when the key binding is active.
I use space to stop & resume playback. It is active globally for the entire window.
I use p & n to move back and forth in the playlist. This only works when my mouse is clicking in the media control panel on the bottom. When i click anywhere else in the application the keys are inactive.
while it makes sense to make these functions only active for the control panel, i'd like to change this. First, it is inconsistent with space and second i find it very inconvenient. Instead, please make all playback controls globally active. I don't know if it is a setting or a feature request.
