How to get subtitles from picture 2 to look like picture 1 from the link of reddit posted below? Mind you, I did not tweak any settings for subtitles so this is what they both appear as default. Any help appreciated!

VLC 3.0 doesn't support rendering subtitles in the black bars,
Your black bars are likely parts of the video.

you can try to tweak preferences --> Show all --> Video --> Subtitles / OSD to adjust the positioning of the subtitles
