How to solve VLC not showing MKV or VOB subtitles [Solution]

Postby gilo » 31 Jul 2020 11:50

This post will hopefully help others who, like me searched for solutions regarding :
Disappearing or not showing subtitles in MKV and DVD ( VOB files ) using VLC.

I'm in no way a techie, but I've seen these questions in many forms, for which I too
looked for solutions, with no proper answer and sometimes even misunderstood.

This is my low tech solution, feel free to correct if there's a better way.

MKV problem : Embedded subtitles not showing in VLC at all.
Solution : Extract subs from MKV to SRT file.

VOB problem : Subtitles not showing or disappear after rewinding or skipping forward using VLC.
Reloading subs ( Subtitles > Add subtitle file... ) works only until the next skipping.
Solution : Merge the VOB files in Command prompt.
( Copy 1.VOB + 2.VOB + 3... Merged.VOB )
Extract subtitles to Merged.SRT.

Hope it helps.
Greetings from Israel.
