Snapshots image ratio

Hi ! When I use VLC to watch a DVD, it works perfectly, but when I take a snapshot, the ratio is wrong. I guess it has something to do with the pixel ratio of the movie but what disturbs me is that this is a new issue : a few years ago, it used to work quite well, the image I got was alike the image I was watching. I read the snapshot documentation but it doesn't seem to mention this issue or any kind of troubleshooting tip.
