"Portable" Smaller VLC focused only on x264/mp4 videos?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

"Portable" Smaller VLC focused only on x264/mp4 videos?

Postby sysadmidnight » 29 Jun 2020 15:31

Uhm... hello :D New to the forums, if this is not the right sub-section to post this, let me know
I downloaded the latest VLC and I noticed installed on disk would require 40+ MB only for the translations (locale directory)
I stripped out those and left only the english ones, saved some space there.
Now, I want to know if there would be a way to make my own "customized" VLC only focusing on x264/m4a/aac playback (mp4 container) deleting all other files from the installation.
What would be the files that I must keep to still be able to playback mp4 videos?
..
I have to shuffle around systems a lot and they're not persistent, this means that I have to constantly re-download VLC all the time. I want to keep the compressed file as small as possible.

Use the .zip file and remove the bigger plugins in demux/ and codec/ You need to keep avcodec one, though.

I made a thorough cleanup of everything inside of the Plugins directory and left only what was necessary for my particular use, which is to playback h264 files in mp4/mkv containers, with Libvorbis audio.
The end result was trimming it down from 130 MB to 50 MB on disk. The ZIP is 20 MB.
Important: audio and video filters (the basic ones) still work with this version.
I'm gonna call it "VLC Tiny" or maybe "VLC Lite".
Can I post the download link? It's here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/49foh03a9g5z ... Jo0sa?dl=0

Now that I think about it, I could probably go even further, if I remove the libavcodec (17 MB for it alone) and leave only the codecs specific to h264.

You would need to recompile libavcodec with only h264 for that. 20MB is not too bad.

Forgot to mention: feel free to redistribute the file and pass the link forwards, re-upload, etc. The purpose with this is to help not to claim credit.

Forgot to include MD5 checksum, version is 3.0.1.1 dated June 2020, the checksum should be the same as the original download.
Including it for the extra-paranoid people out there.
