Moving VLC playlists & media together between computers

I have an external hard drive with music and videos, and would like to create playlists on it. It's primarily attached to my MacBook. However, I would like to take my hard drive with me when I move it between computers, which is another Mac or Windows PC. I've not tested it yet, but just want to find out before I start building a playlist in VLC.

Is it possible to create a playlist on your main computer, and then move it along with the associated media files, and open the playlist correctly on another computer?

mp3tag (windows only) will load playlists. File > Load playlist/cuesheet. Select whichever files you want to transfer and move or copy to a folder using the right click popup menu. Joined just to share the answer I found.
