Can I convert files without playing them?

Hello, I'm trying to convert a large batch of .ram files to .mp3 and vlc seems to be the only software I have that can even handle .ram.
Now I want to use the convert/save function but everytime I try to run it it just plays the first file, it also creates an .mp3 file that if I stop the playback is useless which leads me to believe that vlc just plays the files and records the audio in 1x speed. Is this the only way to convert? Or am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance for any help/clarity
(PS I accidentally posted this in the wrong section earlier, hence the new post with same subject here)
