More info needed.
Which VLC version ?
Which video format ?
Are the subtitles embedded in the video file or external ?

I have the same problem. Some subtitles are shown, some not.
I've tried re-saving the file with Unicode and UTF-8 encoding, but it's the same.
This happens on both VLC 3.0.8 for Windows and for Linux (I use 64bit versions).
It also happens on latest 4.0.0 nightly.

The file format is AVI, with MPEG-4 Visual (XviD) (Advanced Simple@L5) video, and 48kHz MP3 audio,
but I've also tried to merge the video and subtitles track with MKVToolNix, obtaining the same effect.

The strange thing is that if I press the pause button, the subtitle appears, but as soon as I click again to play it disappears. I've made a video to show the behaviour, here is the link:

Please upload a short sample of an original problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
http://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

100 MB max should be enough.

I can't reproduce the issue, subtitles are showing fine to me using D3D11 video output.

Does it show all subtitles? I mean, start playing from 1.30, does it show also the 3rd one at 1.43:
"Friedrich Nietzsche esce dalla porta del numero 6
di via Carlo Alberto," ?
Because I've tried with two notebooks, both Windows 10 LTSC 64bit, and Debian Linux 10. They all give the same error.

You're right, some subtitles are not displayed while their timing is correct.

You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with the links to your file and to this thread.

Really weird. The video contains many N-VOPs (4065 (28,66%) according to MPEG4 Modifier v1.4.6 and they are located mainly in the first third of the file according to GSpot v2.70a). The subtitle #2 is displayed a bit late and remains on the screen until #4 and so on. Please file the bug.
