HDMI quality much worse than chromecast

Hi
I want to connect VLC on my laptop to my tv, and I can do it wither using a HDMI cable or using Chromecast. The quality is much better if I use chromecast, rather than if I use the HDMI cable. I tried in several movies in 1080, and if I use the HDMI, it's a more pixelated and at times less smooth. I tried changing cable and port in the tv (only one hdmi port in my laptop, so I cannot try another one) but the problem remains.

The reason why I'd like to use the HDMI is that one cannot play subtitles with chromecast. Is there maybe some setting that I need to play with to obtain a higher quality picture when i use the HDMI cable?

I have a MacBook Pro (13inches, 2015), the tv is a Vizio M-series 50 inches.

Thanks

HDMI cable does not affect quality, since it transmits raw video. Sounds like you're just watching a lower bit rate version of the content.

But I am playing the same identical file, so i would expect the bitrare to be the same. How do i manage which bitrate am i playing?
