Distortion/stripes for HQ mp4 files

I noticed that VLC has some distortion (looking like stripes) on some kind of video files.
I know this issue for years but never found any information on what it is, how it occurs and if something can be done about that.

I attached an image showing the video playing in Firefox and VLC 3.0.8 (with the media information window opened). I marked some placed where the difference is more noticeable but this pretty much affects the whole movie. I assume that it has something to do with interlacing, but when I switch off the deinterlacing (or change any related setting) nothing changes.

I think deinterlacing filter is not working with your hardware acceleration backend.

If you're using VLC 3.0.x and have video issues.
Try:

  1. Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Disable hw decoding
  2. If you are a Windows user, Preferences -> Video -> Change from direct3d11 to direct3d9
If any solution works, please tell us which one solved your case, Please also quote your video driver name and version.

Or more stupidly, because it's 25fps, likely it was not deinterlaced before re-encoding !

Yeah thanks disabling HW decoding definitely helped. However I wonder that neither firefox, chrome nor other video players I tried are using hw decoding. I also noticed that issue with different notebooks/PCs Intel/AMD/dGPU on Windows and Linux so I guess it is not an issue of my hardware specifically.
