DVD convert/save to a MP4 file with choppy FPS.

So I want to make an edit of a movie, but there’s no clips available online of a particular scene. I know I have a DVD of the movie and I know that VLC media player has a convert/save from a DVD option. So I tried it out, and it worked as in it saved a file to my computer successfully, but the frames were really choppy In the saved file and I know I must be doing something wrong in the settings. So any help would be appreciated!
