hevc 10bit color depth on 8 bit monitor

I've got two monitors, one supports 8bit color depth and the other supports 10bit color depth.
I have an hevc 10bit video. When I play the video on both monitors, it looks exactly the same.
How is this possible? How do I know if I'm seeing 10bit color depth and not 8bit? Does vlc dither the video and display 8bit color depth?
