VLC locks computer

Whenever I close a movie and open another in Mint 19.1 using VLC, my computer locks up. It doesn't happen on any other Mint iteration, only mint 19.1 I've tried troubleshooting every which way I can, but it doesn't do any good. I am up to date on VLC build@icy01-amd64-027 build oct 7 2018
