Issue with VLC player with Windows 7

I've found that VLC player has recently developed an issue with Windows 7 when attempting to play audio CDs. This wasn't an issue with previous versions. It takes about 2 minutes for my DVD ROM player to spring into action and start playing the CD. So far, DVDs seem unaffected. Also trying to save audio tracks to my HDD is no longer possible, as when browsing for tracks to save with the DVD drive selected, the list is a blank. This has not happened before either. But when playing audio CDs in a VM using Windows 2000 and older version of VLC, there are no problems.
I also use Linux Ubuntu. and there VLC player plays normally too. I haven't figured out whether this is an issue with VLC player or Windows 7 as I've just had a Windows update and most of my CD playing in recent times has been confined to the Linux system, so if there has been a recent CD audio issue with Windows 7 I would not have found our until now.
Any ideas please?
